Got an old boiler trundling along in the airing cupboard at home? Are the Big Freeze's sub-zero temperatures making early morning starts unbearable?Older boilers are now so inefficient compared to modern, eco-friendly models that upgrading can save you up to £235 a year.
If your boiler has an energy-efficiency rating between G and A, or is over 15 years old, then upgrading can still work out cost-effective in the long run.
What different types of boiler are there?
Nowadays, almost all new boilers are condensing types.
These new-breed boilers are far more energy-efficient than the traditional guzzlers, cunningly reusing heat that would otherwise be wasted.There are two main types of condensing gas boiler to consider:
Combi' boilers
The first, and most common type, is the gas combination boiler. Unlike boilers of old, a combi runs both your central heating and your hot water from one unit. There's no need for a separate hot water storage cylinder or cold water feed cistern, so they take up much less room than heat-only boilers (below).
One drawback, though, is that there's a small time lag between turning on the tap and getting hot water, and the flow rate is limited by how quickly the boiler is able to heat up the water.
This type of boiler should suit all but the largest houses.
Heat-only boilers or conventional boilers
For those looking for something that only powers radiators, a heat-only boiler provides the answer. However, these need to be connected to a separate hot water storage system including a hot water cylinder, cold water cistern and, in some cases, an additional expansion cistern.
This can prove problematic in smaller homes, most of which should almost certainly opt for the combi option. Larger homes, though, will benefit from the ability to provide oodles of hot water to several sources at once.
Worth noting is that, unless the cylinder is very well insulated, it usually loses heat into its surroundings, thereby wasting energy and reducing efficiency.
